Guardian Angels staying in Vancouver

Jan, 21 2007 - 3:20 AM

VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980) - The red berets are here to stay.

That from the new Vancouver chapter leader of the Guardian Angels crime watch group after their first month of regular street patrols.

Dennis Watson says the angels haven't faced any opposition, even in Vancouver's toughest neighborhood, "I am amazed at the response from the people, especially on the Downtown Eastside. The response has been very positive from everyone we've spoken with, pretty much."

Patrolled areas now include Chinatown, the Granville Mall and the area surrounding the 29th Avenue Skytrain station.

The Vancouver chapter has 12 members, but is actively recruiting more.

Watson says the focus is on crime prevention and avoiding conflict.

Guardian Angels patrol Skytrain station

Jan, 06 2007 - 5:50 AM

VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980) - A local patrol group was making its presence known at the 29th Street Skytrain station.

The Guardian Angels were patrolling the Skytrain station after several attacks against women were reported between there and the Joyce station.

Chapter leader Dennis Watson says they wanted to help out, "We took the Skytrain out to 29th Street to check out the situation there with the new assaults. So we wanted to make sure we made our presence known there to see if we could help the community kind of avoid this thing from happening."

Watson says they did assist when a young man was struck by a car.
